Following the success of its racing suits in Sarajevo in 1984, Descente went back to work to prepare for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. The company turned its attention to the development of a new generation of high performance outerwear that could withstand the chilliest Canadian conditions. This jacket is light and dark gray with a gold tone strip down the back center, as well as on the sleeves and on the front. It zips and snaps. There is a zip-out hood. It has an elasticized waistband. The Descente patch is on one sleeve and the Solar-A patch is on the other sleeve, as well as a three-arrow patch. The gold-tone strip down the back of the jacket has a pattern of triangles embroidered in red. The jacket has a red satin-type lining. There are two side pockets with zippers and snaps. Solar battery technology inspired Descente's R&D team to work with the Japanese textile developer Unitika Ltd. on the creation of a new fabric that converted light to heat. The collaboration yielded Solar ?, a material infused with zirconium carbide - a key component of solar power generators - to absorb solar rays and convert them to heat. In contrast to conventional garments that relied on passive heat retention, garments that incorporated Solar ? technology actually created warmth. Not only was the function of the technology unique, but so was the color of the fabric. The zirconium carbide component gave the fabric a distinctive gunmetal shade. Teams added their own national color highlights to their uniforms, but gunmetal was THE new skiwear color at Calgary.
